Hunter Tisdall (3), of Middlemarch, takes a break on his pony Jiggy during the Strath Taieri Pony Club Gymkhana, held in ''brilliant sunny'' weather at the Middlemarch Show Grounds yesterday.

The opening day of the club's annual competition and fundraiser drew 65 participants, club president Lynnore Templeton said, slightly fewer than usual.

''But Easter gets really busy for people, and I'm sure that numbers will grow over the weekend,'' she said.

Of the club's 25 members, 16 competed, along with independent riders, and riders from the Mosgiel and West Taieri Pony Clubs.

Strath Taieri club won the Kirkland Trophy after winning the most points during activities including Tidiest Turnout and a flag race.

The club's showgrounds are occupied with horse-related activities throughout Easter weekend, including a hunt organised by the Otago Hunt Club.

All of the activities help to raise money for the Strath Taieri club, which, Ms Templeton said, ''helps us run our club for the year, and raise funds so the kids can compete in other events''.
