Them's the brakes - a young Dunedin man found out the hard way the watery consequences of forgetting a simple step when parking his ute.

Emergency services were called about 5.40pm yesterday when the Mitsubishi ute ended up in Otago Harbour near the Vauxhall boat ramp.

A police spokeswoman said the 22-year-old driver had forgotten to put the handbrake on and the vehicle rolled down into the water.

No injuries were reported.

But the problem remained of how to get the ute out.

Witnesses said a hardy local took the plunge and swum out to attach a tow rope.

After securing the rope, he gave a thumbs-up from the water.

Police said the mission was successful and the vehicle was later removed from the water.
