A 29-year-old Dunedin man caught travelling 107kmh more than the speed limit at the weekend said he was testing his car after it had been tuned, police say.
Dunedin Central Senior Constable Marty Van Elst, of the strategic traffic unit, said he checked the motorist travelling at 187kmh along Brighton Rd, between Green Island and Waldronville, at 12.40pm on Saturday.
"That was just a ridiculous speed," he said.
The speed limit for the area is 80kmh.
The man said the car had been tuned for competition use and he was testing it, Snr Const Van Elst said.
The car also carried 21-year-old female passenger.
The driver had "a blatant disregard for others", Snr Const Van Elst said.
The man's licence was immediately suspended for 28 days.
He is scheduled to appear in court later this month on a charge of driving at a dangerous speed.
