Man sets himself alight in central Dunedin

Startled pedestrians watched as a man set his jacket on fire in central Dunedin this afternoon.

Senior Sergeant Kelvin Lloyd said emergency services were called to the corner of Moray Place and George St, following multiple reports of a man trying to set himself alight.

A member of the public tried to douse the flames from the agitated man, while a passing police officer assisted.

The 42-year-old man was taken to Dunedin Hospital with burn injuries that were not considered serious.

He confirmed the man was also being assessed by the psychiatric service.

A member of the public was  treated at the scene for minor burns to his hand.
