Onlookers watched in horror today as a man twice ran in front of trucks, the first swerving to avoid him, the second hitting him.
Witness Jay Cameron said he saw the man run and stand in front of a large Coca-Cola truck in Dunedin shortly before noon.
The driver swerved his truck to avoid the man, who was described as being in an agitated state.
He returned to the side of the road but moments later ran into the path of a smaller contractor's truck and was hit.
Mr Cameron said he went to help the man, along with the truck's driver, who told him "I think I just killed him''.
"He was groaning and covered in blood.''
The man was taken to Dunedin Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries, Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said.
Police had yet to speak to the man, who was aged in his 20s.
