Man charged with attempted murder after drive-by shooting

A man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder in relation to Friday's drive-by shooting in Thomas Burns St, police say.

Earlier today, armed police swooped on a Highgate address near Roslyn Village and arrested a 25-year-old man in relation to the shooting.

A witness said plainclothes officers wearing stabproof vests could be seen maintaining cordons on Highgate at the Ann and Hereford St intersections about 2.30pm today.

Detective Sergeant Hayden Smale, of the Dunedin Police Organised Crime Unit, said police were still working to establish the exact circumstances of the shooting.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said yesterday that the victim of the shooting had been in a car, stopped at the lights on Thomas Burns St near the pedestrian overbridge.

A vehicle driving past saw it, turned around and a passenger fired a shot, he said.

The victim fled the scene and was left uninjured, but shaken.

Damage to the bonnet of the victim’s car suggested it had been hit by a shotgun blast.

Following the incident, police, including Armed Offenders Squad (AOS) members, attended an address in Brighton.

"Enquiries revealed the occupants of that address are not involved in the incident in any way," Det Sgt Smale said.

A 2005 silver BMW, registration GCE188, which police believe was involved in the shooting, had pulled up in their driveway and stayed for about 30 seconds.

That vehicle is yet to be found and police want to hear from anyone who may have seen it since Friday.

The man is due to appear in Dunedin District Court tomorrow.
