The armed offenders squad was involved in a tense five-hour standoff with a man who had barricaded himself inside a Mosgiel home early yesterday.
Police were called to a domestic incident shortly after midnight at Ayr St, where they heard a woman screaming inside the house, Sergeant Ed Baker, of Dunedin, said.
As police tried to break down the barricaded front door, the woman seized the opportunity to escape out a window.
The 27-year-old man then threatened to harm himself, and told police there was a firearm inside the house.
The armed offenders squad was called to the scene and surrounded the property while police negotiators talked to the man.
A five-hour standoff ensued, before the man left the house and was arrested on a Crimes Act charge of assaulting a female, Sgt Baker said.
Christopher John Ralston, unemployed, appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday and was remanded in custody by consent, and without plea, to next Thursday.
