The arena version of the musical, which played at the Regent Theatre in Dunedin in 2014, is coming to Dunedin's More FM Arena at the Edgar Centre, where seating for 3200 people will include places at tables around the stage, so audience members can double as wedding guests within the show.
Two shows next October will be a joint venture between promoter Doug Kamo and the Taieri Musical Society, which also put on the original musical at the Regent.
Mr Kamo, who will also be directing the show, said getting the rights for the arena show was another feather in Dunedin's cap.
"We are paving the way for regional theatres doing arena-sized productions.''
In 2016, Mr Kamo directed Grease the Arena Spectacular Live! at the Edgar Centre in an arena-style production, which he said differed from a normal stage.
"There is seating on all sides and angles so you cannot hide, which makes it more challenging.
"Our approach needs to be a lot bigger than a standard production because everything is magnified.''
Producer Blair Hughson said the production behind the show would be enormous.
"It's kind of like a boxing ring, where you have audiences all the way around so you have to make it interesting from every angle.''
Auditioning for the cast of 46 will begin in mid-March.
Edgar Centre general manager Blair Crawford said the show would be the biggest event the More FM Arena had hosted with room for an audience of up to 3200.
Normally the arena holds about 2800 people for the larger sports events.
