Major farewelled in full military funeral

A full military funeral was held in Dunedin yesterday to celebrate the life and service of Fred Daniel, a man synonymous with the New Zealand military and the Dunedin Returned and Services Association.

Mr Daniel, MBE, 83, died peacefully last Friday at Montecillo Veterans’ Home and Hospital.

He was a retired army major in the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment with a career spanning 32 years, which included service in Malaya (1960-64), Borneo (1965-66) and Vietnam (1967).

He was a former president of the Dunedin RSA and was made a life member of the organisation in 2016.

He was also a longtime chief executive of the Montecillo War Veterans’ Home for 36 years, and a former Otago Rugby Union president.

Following his funeral at Hope and Sons yesterday, he was buried at the Port Chalmers Services Cemetery where his casket, draped in the New Zealand flag, was taken from a hearse to the graveside by six soldiers and a bagpiper.

The flag was then folded and given to family before the casket was lowered.

A bugler played Last Post and reveille, and then six soldiers with military rifles gave a three-volley salute.

Close friend and fellow serviceman Lox Kellas said it was a fitting farewell to a man who gave so much to his country and his local community.

"It was well attended by many present and past service personnel, and there was lots of laughter.

"He was an incredible gentleman.

"It was a fitting tribute for a man who gave so much support to the local military community. It was his life."

An obituary will follow.
