A team of seven Dunedin City Council water and waste staff left Dunedin yesterday with two trucks and three utes, scheduled to meet their Christchurch counterparts this morning.

Water reticulation supervisor Mark Ratten said the group "all volunteered early" and while some were apprehensive about what they would see and experience in Christchurch, they were keen to help.

The group will work until Friday, repairing burst water mains under the guidance of Christchurch's City Care.

Another contingent may go up next week, depending on what was required.

In the interim, Dunedin's water and waste crew was "back to skeleton" and Mr Ratten hoped citizens would understand if minor problems were not attended to promptly.
