Mail destined for scores of Dunedin households went undelivered after a mail bag was stolen in Maori Hill last Friday.
New Zealand Post spokeswoman Jaimee Burke said the bag was stolen from a storage location in Falkland St and contained items due to be delivered to about 79 Maori Hill households that day.
It was not known exactly how many items the bag contained, but a typical mail bag contained about 150 items.
''New Zealand Post takes the theft of mail very seriously and this incident was reported to the police for investigation,'' Ms Burke said.
New Zealand Post knew which households were affected and they were notified in a letter earlier this week, which apologised for any inconvenience caused.
If anyone was expecting an item of mail and it had not appeared, they should contact the sender and lodge details with New Zealand Post's customer service centre on 0800-501-501.
Any suspicious activity should be reported to the police, Ms Burke said.
