Lucky Lotto shop making room for silverware

A Dunedin  Lotto shop has been ``luckier'' than any other in New Zealand so far this year and is extending its trophy display today to cater for its winning streak.

Lotto NZ spokeswoman Emilia Mazur said five Lotto first division winning tickets and two Powerball first division winning tickets had been sold in Dunedin this year.

South Dunedin Night 'n Day sold three first division winning tickets and one Powerball winning ticket between May and August this year.

A married couple won $13million in Powerball first division and $333,333 in Lotto first division on Saturday.

South Dunedin Night 'n Day was the only retail store in New Zealand to sell three Lotto first division winning tickets this year, making it New Zealand's ``luckiest'' Lotto store, Ms Mazur said.

South Dunedin Night 'n Day was ranked the 12th ``luckiest'' Lotto shop in Dunedin of all time.

However, shop co-owner Murray Devereux said it should be considered the second-luckiest Dunedin Lotto shop because in mid-April this year it took over the Lotto machine from Newtone Drycleaners, which was second on the all-time list.

The business name had changed but the drycleaner continued to run in the shop.

Even though it was the same Lotto machine, Lotto NZ listed the two companies separately on the luckiest list.

Lotto NZ awarded trophies for every ``big prize'' a retailer sold, including for a $2 scratchie worth $20,000 sold by the store in May.

``We've had five trophies in four months.''

Consequently, the trophy shelving display was being extended today, he said.

South Dunedin Night 'n Day shop assistant Katrina Carey said Lotto tickets were selling fast at the shop yesterday, the luck of the shop attracting punters.

``We've sold a fair few.''

Ms Mazur said the other Lotto first division winning tickets sold in Dunedin were bought at Countdown South Dunedin and Gardens New World.

The other Powerball first division winning ticket was sold at Pak'n Save Dunedin - the $13.36million win was the biggest in Otago.

The ticket was a second division winner but collected first prize after the $40million ``must-be-won'' draw, when the top prize was not struck outright and the jackpot rolled down to the next division.
