Lorde superfans line up early

A group of Lorde superfans began lining up outside the Dunedin Town Hall at 5.30am this morning.

Columba College pupil Beth Moody (16) said waiting for well over 12 hours was worth it for getting a position close to the stage.

"We are all big fans of Lorde and  [excited] to see someone who is inspirational and amazing at music."

"It's really important to us to actually be able to see them up close," Beth said.

She expected the concert, which was even more special given Lorde was turning 21 today, would be  "emotionally raw".

"I think it's going to be very emotional for all of us, because she is such a huge inspiration."

Beth arrived outside the town hall at 5.30am, others arrived in a trickle and by just before 10am there were 13 people waiting, nine of which were part of her group.

While she was waiting a security guard told her there was a sound-check at the town hall last night, which made her believe Lorde was already in Dunedin.

While they waited they were splitting their time between playing cards, studying for upcoming exams and just "hanging out together and being able to enjoy such a special moment".

Beth's friend and fellow Columba College pupil Senna Lee (16) said the group had a special connection to Lorde's music.

"[She has an] ability to sonically capture through metaphors  and visuals the way that being 15 in a small town feels and the inescapable mood."

She was also constantly evolving.

"As she ages we age too."

"She's not afraid to be herself, she's quite different, she doesn't try and fit in with the status quo."

She was most looking forward to Lorde playing the emotional ballad Liability.

"It's a real special moment and everyone is just crying."
