Know of any good sorts? Well, now they can be recognised thanks to the new West Harbour Community awards scheme.

The scheme was recently adopted by the West Harbour Community Board to recognise people doing wonderful things in the community.

Board member Ryan Jones proposed the idea to the board on August 30 and it was supported.

He said the community was filled with good sorts and the awards would not only recognise them but also pay tribute to them. An awards function would be announced soon, he added.

Mr Jones said the awards were a way to engage the community with the council and each other as well as having the opportunity to acknowledge "local legends''.

The scheme will consist of five awards. Four will recognise "outstanding contribution'' and the other one will crown a "community champion''.

If you know of anyone in the West Harbour community you would like to nominate, email westharbourcommunityawards@gmail.co.nz with a short summary of why you think they deserve an award.

• Nominations close on November 7.
