A new toilet is set to replace the long-drop at Outram Glen.

Resource consent documents provided by the Dunedin City Council said a prefabricated "Permaloo" unit would consist of two accessible stalls.

There would be a 10,000-litre water supply tank on site and a 10,000-litre septic holding tank equipped with a monitor to alert council staff when the tank was 80% full.

A specialist waste removal contractor would be dispatched to empty the holding tank and dispose of the waste at a council wastewater treatment plant, the documents said.

Many locals used the area for walking, running, swimming and walking dogs.

The swimming hole, which was popular in summer, was located at the entrance to the Lee Stream-Outram Glen walk where the new toilet was planned, the documents said.

Public use of the site was concentrated in that area, close to the swimming hole, "thus the toilet can be used as a changing room also and is potentially likely to be used more as it is closer to the main area where people tend to gather/relax".

A condition of the consent was that the existing public toilet facility be demolished and all disused components removed from the site.
