The logo for the South's new district health board captures the essence of both Otago and Southland, resembling the rolling hills and rugged coasts of both regions, Otago and Southland District Health Boards' chief executive Brian Rousseau says.

Dunedin graphic designer Tim Kemmett's design was chosen from 78 entries to brand the Southern District Health Board, which comes into effect tomorrow when the Otago and Southland District Health Boards merge.

"I had aimed for a modern, sleek fresh look, with the flowing lines representing wind, water and movement", the happy 28-year-old graphics specialist said.

Yesterday Mr Rousseau unveiled the design at Dunedin Hospital, presenting Mr Kemmett with an iPhone, the prize donated by Telecom.

The "simple yet effective" design captured the essence of both regions, Mr Rousseau said.

"Panel members felt the waves closely resembled the rolling hills and rugged coasts of our regions.

"We are confident this logo will stand the test of time and is one our new organisation can be proud of."

The judging panel's decision was unanimous, he said.
