Silence reigned in Otago Boys High School library on Saturday, as Dunedin secondary school chess players fought for a place in the national final.

An air of absolute concentration prevailed, the occasional nail was bitten and hands clenched, as the six teams played five rounds in the Otago Secondary Schools Team Championship.

Play was completed in silence to allow players total concentration.

Otago Chess Club treasurer Quentin Johnson said the format had been changed this year from a weekly competition to a one-day challenge, to make it easier for teachers and pupils to participate.

The team with the highest score, Logan Park High School A, will represent Otago at the national secondary teams competition in Palmerston North in September.

Results. - Logan Park High School, 14.5pts, 1; Otago Boys High School A, 11, 2; Kings High School, 9.5, 3; Otago Boys High School B 9.5, 4; Logan Park High School B 7.5, 6.
