Liquidation hearing for jeweller this month

An application for liquidation has been filed against one of Dunedin's oldest family businesses, the 146-year-old G&T Young jewellery store.

The application was made in the High Court at Dunedin on November 12, on behalf of Brian Oughton Ltd, an Auckland-based jewellery manufacturer claiming to be owed money by the Dunedin family jewellery business.

The hearing will be in the High Court at Dunedin on January 26.

Contacted yesterday, G&T Young director Roy Young confirmed there was money outstanding, but said the exact amount was "in dispute".

He declined to comment further about the hearing.

In November, he told the Otago Daily Times he was fighting to save the family business after a "very quiet" winter, and feared the store could close by mid-January unless Christmas sales were good.

The store, which opened in 1862, is believed to be New Zealand's oldest jewellery business.

Asked yesterday how his business had fared over the holiday period, Mr Young said December sales had been "very good".

"I'm happy with December sales," was all he would say.

The application for liquidation is being handled by Auckland-based law firm Rennie Cox Lawyers, but staff there could not be reached for comment yesterday.

The owner of Brian Oughton Ltd was also unavailable yesterday, and staff spoken to declined to comment.
