Several motels are booked out, while others have just a few rooms available.
Sahara Motel manager Stacie Price said all rooms for Tuesday night had been booked out three months ago.
The strong interest had taken her by surprise, she said.
"I had people calling up for that date, thinking it was just a normal date, and then I'd go in and look and it was already booked out,'' she said.
Allan Court Motel was also booked out a few months ago, as had the Bella Vista Motel.
The Distinction Hotel Dunedin was also booked out for Tuesday evening.
Allan Court Motel owner Lee Ping said most guests were New Zealand rugby fans who often stayed at the motel for major matches.
Some guests were coming from Christchurch and the North Island. He had received only one booking from a United Kingdom-based guest.
Scenic Hotels were an exception.
Scenic Hotel Group Dunedin area general manager Richard de Graaf said "a handful'' of rooms were available at both the Scenic Hotel Southern Cross and Scenic Hotel Dunedin.
"There is still room at the inn.''
The British and Irish Lions team would be staying in the Scenic Hotel Southern Cross and the hotel would have decorations to welcome both the team and fans from the United Kingdom.
Excitement was high for the match and interest was "on par with an All Blacks test'', Mr de Graaf said.
"We are extremely excited for it all to start. It's going to be good fun.''
