Line dancers descending on city for big event

Line dancing is set to take off in Dunedin as more than 300 people from around New Zealand and Australia come to town to dance their boots off.

The Dunedin Boots and Beats Club is hosting what will be the biggest line dance event to be held in the city at the Edgar Centre this weekend.

Three-time Crystal Boot award winner Heather Barton, of Scotland, will be joined by Stephen Paterson and Luke Watson, of Australia, as well as Laressa Frost, of Christchurch, to teach line dance enthusiasts some new steps.

Ms Barton said she had taught line dancing around the world for 28 years but never thought she would ever come to Dunedin as an instructor.

Members of the club started taking part in her online lessons during the Covid-19 lockdown and there was an instant connection.

Ms Barton said line dancing was a great way to meet new people, good exercise and helped keep you on top of your mental health.

"Everybody says they’ve got two left feet. We can sort that out — it’s no problem."

She had a few new dances she could not wait to teach and was planning on wearing a Scottish fat suit that she was going to have a lot of fun with.

Event organiser Lorna Williams said line dancing had changed over the years and was making a comeback.

Nowadays, people line danced to all types of music, including rock’n’roll and Irish pop, but of course were still dancing to country, she said.

No special clothes were required.

The club had members ranging in age from 20 to 80.
