Noel and Sue Walker, of Te Anau, have been directing the gang show since 1980.
This year’s event will be their 19th, and they fully intend to be back directing their 20th show in 2019.
The show, which began in 1956 but had a 10-year hiatus to 1976, is put on by Scouts and Guides every second year.
Mr Walker said the couple was "very involved with scouting", but also had an interest in theatre, and providing young people the experience of live theatre.
"I think for us, the biggest buzz and the biggest reason is just the chance to work with young people in a theatre environment."
They travelled every weekend from Te Anau for rehearsals, as did three members of the cast.
Another six travelled from Central Otago, and one from Balclutha.
The rest were from Dunedin.
Their first show in 1980 — they moved from Dunedin to Te Anau later that decade — was "pretty rough". The pair were about 20, and "very inexperienced".
Mrs Walker said the extent of the choreography in the early days would be marching in rows.
"Now it’s fully choreographed."
What kept them coming back was the young people they worked with, and developing skills in a cast the members "would never have dreamt" they possessed when they started.
"A lot of them have gone on to do other theatrical things," Mrs Walker said.
This year’s show, beginning next Tuesday, will have a James Bond theme.
