Lesson sparks fire safety awareness

Pupils from North East Valley Normal School were in for a treat when a firefighter walked into their classroom this week.

Senior Firefighter Mat Loughney, of Willowbank station, ran a Firewise session for the children, where he taught them about keeping themselves and their families safe in the event of a fire.

SFF Loughney taught the children to "get down, get low, and get out, and meet at your family’s designated meeting area".

One of the pupils, Rowan, 6, said he was going to go home and tell his parents they needed a safe meeting place.

"I think I know the perfect place, my letterbox," he said.

His favourite part of the programme was getting to lift SFF Loughney’s 15kg oxygen tank.

It "wasn’t very heavy", Rowan said.

The teachers briefed the pupils on Firewise information before Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) representative SFF Loughney arrived, and that showed as children answered questions with confidence.

"I feel like it’s something they enjoy doing, and when they enjoy it, they learn it, and they’re really keen to show me that they’ve learnt it," SFF Loughney said.

The Firewise project is mainly for years 1 and 2 and Fenz adapts it for different ages.

He said children took what they had learned home to their parents, and asked them to check smoke alarms and organise a safe meeting zone outside the home.

"The kids need a safe exit from the home and once they’re out they need a safe meeting place, where you can meet them if you can’t get out at the same time," SFF Loughney said.
