A Dunedin skateboarder learnt a lesson about sharing the road when he collided with a bus while skateboarding yesterday morning.

The 19-year-old, a refuse worker, was travelling down Clyde St when he turned into Union St East and hit the front of a Citibus bus.

Senior Constable Kelvin Trainor, of the police commercial vehicle investigation unit, said witnesses believed the skateboarder was travelling about 50kmh when he failed to take the corner.

The bus driver saw him and managed to stop before the collision.

The skateboarder received a gash to the head and bruising, but "nothing life threatening", he said.

Snr Const Trainor wanted to remind skateboarders "to be aware they are road users and have to share the road".
