A leopard seal rests at St Clair Beach in October two years ago. Members of the public are being asked to help track the presence of the rare apex predators by reporting sightings on Otago and Canterbury beaches from today to October 12. In a statement, Leopardseals.org and University of Canterbury scientists said precise details of locations and, where possible, high-resolution photographs of the animals would assist research under way. The study was part of a larger research project focused on understanding the ecology and biology of leopard seals in New Zealand.

"By collecting data on their behaviour and body condition, we aim to gather valuable insights that will inform conservation strategies and enhance our understanding of this often-misunderstood species," the statement said.
