Two cranes carefully lift a 40m steel section of the new shared cycle-pedestrian bridge over the Water of Leith into place yesterday afternoon.

It took about 30 minutes for the two crane drivers and support staff, working in co-operation, to lift the steel section from the Otago Yacht Club side of the Leith to the city side.

The $1.4million cable-stay bridge will span the Leith between the railway and the harbour near Forsyth Barr Stadium, connecting the State Highway 88 shared path to cycleways around the inner harbour and into the central city.

A 20m-high steel mast and timber decking will also feature on the structure, which is expected to be completed by mid-November.
