Building blocks are taking shape for Mosgiel Library's weekly Lego Club, starting this Friday.
Librarian Linda Roxburgh said the library had bought some Lego blocks and been given others.
Donations were appreciated as the blocks were not cheap, she said.
The club meets for the first time this Friday in the Downes Room, from 6pm to 7pm, and will be a weekly event.
The Lego club was a good opportunity to draw in primary school-aged children who were not already well-catered for, Mrs Roxburgh said.
While there were school holiday programmes for those children, there was a gap.
‘‘We had a wee gap. We've got a couple of programmes we run for pre-schoolers - there's a story time and a wriggles and rhymes - and there was a primary school-aged gap.''
Library assistant and Lego club co-ordinator Lauryn Urquhart-Eaton said the Lego club programme could help demystify the library for those primary school-aged children who might be deterred by the sight of stacks of books.
‘‘[It is] something that will make them feel happy about coming into the library if they've not been in a lot. It can be a bit confronting if you are not a library-user.''
Mrs Roxburgh said building with Lego blocks had an enduring appeal across generations.
‘‘It's something that's never died out.''
Mrs Urquhart-Eaton said interest in the club was already high and she was excited about the regular event.
She said there was no formal structure to the inaugural Lego club night but she planned to introduce more focused play during future sessions.
‘‘We're planning on doing a theme once a month. We're hoping to add a bit of literacy through books too. That's still in the works.''
