Leaving it to professionals

Credit checks and chasing bad debts are not part of Bruce Robinson's core business as a property manager for Premier Properties (Otago).

He leaves those functions to Protocol Credit and believes the services offered by the credit-control and debt-collecting business have added good value to what he does best: managing property.

Mr Robinson is working with Protocol and the other nine licensed Real Estate Institute property managers in Otago to set up a database of undesirable clients.

Protocol already successfully provided credit checks for some of the nine licensed managers.

"Once people pass into debt, or do a runner, we pass the file across to Protocol who pursue and collect the debt.

"Sometimes people take 12 months to surface, but Protocol can find them."

Protocol charged a normal fee for the collection of the debt, but Mr Robinson would tell property owners that getting something back was far better than getting nothing.

Even $5 a week was a bonus.

Protocol ran training sessions for property managers and had so far had a good response, Mr Robinson said.
