A reality television show is testing whanau responses behind the wheel in Dunedin.
The reality learner-driver TV show Mama-Son Learner League has three teams of mothers and teenage sons competing in a series of driving challenges.
The teams are from Balclutha, Christchurch and Auckland and the winners take home a car.
Kahawai Productions director Brendon Butt, of Dunedin, said the aim of the show was to highlight the need to increase communication levels between parents and children so teenage boys were involved in fewer accidents.
''Don't just throw your keys at your teenager and say goodbye to them - keep communication open;
and sons, don't ignore your parents, they know more about driving than you do,'' Mr Butt said.
The competition included teams driving golf carts on a rink at Dunedin Ice Stadium on Tuesday and a reversing challenge on the Octagon carriageway yesterday.
The production would move to Beachlands Speedway at Waldronville for a speed challenge today and Highlands Motorsport Park, Cromwell, tomorrow, for a supercar challenge.
Filming would return to Dunedin on Monday and finish on Tuesday.
The series would air on Maori Television early next year, Mr Butt said.
Competitors Selena Aitken-Bayle, of Balclutha. said she had been teaching her son Sean (16) how to drive since he got his learners licence in September.
Some lessons had been nerve-wracking but her son was getting better, Mrs Aitken-Bayle said.
''I get a little bit loud and scared but he's not too bad.''
