A summer of hard work has paid off for a group of University of Otago law students who will soon represent the Pacific region at an international moot court competition in Taipei.

The moot court competition in World Trade Organisation (WTO) law is organised by the European Law Students Association.

Hannah Macdonald, Grace Brown, Andrew Tringham and Anna Jacob spent the summer working on their written submissions for the Pacific regional round and recently found out they, and a group from Melbourne University, had been selected for the final oral round in Taipei.

A simulated hearing in the WTO dispute settlement system, the competition involves teams representing both the complainant and respondent parties to the case around biofuel use, by presenting oral submissions in front of a panel of WTO law experts.

The competition provided students with an opportunity to put theory into practice, complementing their formal legal education.

That meant plenty of coaching ahead in moot technique and legal arguments in the lead-up to the May competition, Miss Brown said.

"It's been an amazing experience."

Mr Tringham said it had been very interesting applying law to an actual case.

The first edition of the ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO Law (EMC2) took place in April 2003.
