It is unclear exactly when the Beach Hotel in St Kilda will reopen as the landlord tries to recover "a substantial amount" owed by the former lessee.

Andrew Hocken, spokesman for landlord Grant's Motels Ltd, which is owned by his parents, Twizel property developers Frank and Lee Hocken, said yesterday the company hoped to have the hotel operating by the end of the month.

Talks were being held with potential operators.

In the meantime, the company was still trying to get a resolution with the previous hotel business lessee, Nicotz Ltd, which is owned by Patricia Bryce and David Kane.

The Beach Hotel, bottle store and accommodation were closed on March 1 when Grant's Motel took possession after it had given Nicotz a "substantial period of time" to pay its debts, Andrew Hocken said.

Nicotz was placed in liquidation on March 2.

The telephone number for Ms Bryce and Mr Kane was disconnected yesterday and no-one was at the hotel.

Andrew Hocken declined to say how much money was owed, but said rent, rates and outgoings had not been paid for several months.

If no suitable arrangements could be made, the company would consider other options for the site, he said.
