Kura keen to hear voice of community

The board of trustees at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Otepoti has taken another step towards a possible move to the former High Street School in Dunedin.

A community consultation meeting will be held at High Street School on Monday at 3.30pm to gauge the feelings of the Mornington community and any other interested parties, kura principal Amiria Stirling said.

"We need to hear the voice of the community to see what they say about the situation."

Miss Stirling said the Fairfield-based Maori immersion school was seriously considering a move to the High Street School premises because the Maori community in Dunedin believed the school was not as accessible as they would like.

"It's too far away for some parents to send their kids there. Access is the main issue because it's not on the way to work."

Miss Stirling said the education ministry was doing a feasibility study on the kura to see how a move might affect the school financially and how it would affect the pupils.

Following the recent removal of two relocatable classrooms transported to Christchurch, the school has three classrooms remaining.

Miss Stirling said there would be plenty of room for the kura's nine pupils.

The High Street School board of trustees applied to the ministry last year to close the 123-year-old school because of severely declining rolls. It was officially closed on February 28 this year.
