Dunedin Kronic retailers proved their reliability last night when police conducted the first of what they say will be a series of sting operations at premises that sell the cannabis substitute.

Sergeant Chris McLellan said 20 Dunedin retailers were visited by Public Health South and local police in a combined operation last night, but only two sales were made.

Eighteen of the sellers were diligent and asked for the volunteers' identification.

Two volunteers aged under 18 were involved with the operation, similar to those conducted for controlled alcohol purchases, he said.

Kronic can legally be sold only to people aged 18 and over.

"While it's disappointing two outlets made sales, we are pleased the majority were thorough in regard to ensuring the regulations around this product are followed," Sgt McLellan said.

The matter of the two dairies where sales were made would be handed over to the Ministry of Health for prosecution.

"On the positive side of it, the majority of dairy owners were aware of their obligations and are taking steps to ensure this product is not getting into the hands of young people," he said.

Police would continue to conduct regular covert purchase operations concerning Kronic, Sgt McLellan said.
