Looking every bit the cat that got the cream and featuring wonderful and dignified names, such as Barbarossa Bo-Jangles and Ishcus Dragon Simara, more than 40 felines vied to be the supreme exhibit on show at the Southern Cross All Breeds Cat Club's annual show in Green Island yesterday.
About 45 exhibits were on show and judges were gathered from far and wide, with one coming from Brisbane, show secretary Zena Pigden said.
Veterans and newcomers alike came together for yesterday's event. Breeder Margaret Graham showed her 4-month-old seal tabby exotic, Barbarossa Bo-Jangles, for the first time and came away with a best in show kitten class award.
"It's his first show and probably his last,'' she said with a laugh.
"He just got thrown in there to make up numbers. I didn't think he would get that [award] at all.''
The late decision to enter Bo-Jangles meant he was not up to usual show standards.
"He didn't really have any [preparation work],'' she said.
"Normally we bathe them and groom them and make sure everything is clean. And, of course, make sure they are well behaved, which is hard when they are this small.''
Mrs Graham has been competing in shows since 1996. She breeds cats and has four studs and seven females.
Mrs Pigden also won a best in show award for her 3-year-old Maine coon, Ishcus Dragon Simara.
The large cat had "came all the way from Ireland to be a breeding cat for me'', she said.
He would become even larger despite his already imposing size, she said.
"He's going to come into more coat as he gets older and he will become heavier and more solid,'' she said.
