Reid Park Kindergarten teacher Michelle Brown said the missing guinea pigs were returned to the kindergarten by former pupils at 8.20am.
The 5-year-old guinea pigs were missing and their outdoor hutch was open when staff came to work on Monday.
Ms Brown said the former pupils had found the guinea pigs roaming in the neighbouring Peter Johnstone Park on Sunday and had taken them home.
''Their mother saw the ODT and sent her children down with them.''
The return made some of the staff cry with joy, Ms Brown said.
When the children arrived yesterday and saw a large sign on the front door declaring the animals' safe return, they were ''ecstatic'' and hollered ''they're back, they're back, they came back''.
Pupil Brianna Paterson (4) was one of the first to have a snuggle with Snowball, Ms Brown said.
''Snowball was on her knee and ... was literally just chilling out, relaxed, with grass being fed into her mouth. It was gorgeous.''
Teacher Anita Campbell said she was ''stoked'' the guinea pigs had been safely returned and, despite the drama, still enjoyed being handled by the children.
''The guinea pigs knew they were home,'' Mrs Campbell said.
People could not be stopped from using the playground when the kindergarten was closed so a sturdier, lockable hutch was being investigated.
The guinea pigs' missing food container had not been returned, she said.
The kindergarten was inundated with offers of replacement guinea pigs, which were declined in the hope Snowball and Mischief would be returned.
