The young are celebrating the old today at centennial celebrations for a North Dunedin kindergarten building.
The Kelsey Yaralla Kindergarten is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its Trent Ave building with special lessons and something for the older members of its community.
A special afternoon tea for life members, former pupils and teachers will be held after class today, when speeches will be given and cake will be eaten.
Head teacher Danielle Atkinson said the children had been learning about the legacy of the kindergarten’s founder, Lavina Kelsey.
Miss Kelsey, originally from England, founded the kindergarten with a donation of £100 from Eadith Walker, a woman from Yaralla, in Australia.
The kindergarten has been educating children for 130 years, but spent 30 years moving around before it settled in the Trent Ave building 100 years ago.
The building had gone through many restorations over the years, and was reinforced after the Christchurch earthquakes.
A timeline of the kindergarten’s history was on display around the classroom for the children to see.
Mrs Atkinson said the children were a bit young to appreciate the history, but continued the tradition of learning how to be kind, friendly and working together.
