Keynote speakers replaced

Organisers of a music teachers' conference being held in Dunedin this week had to make last-minute revisions to the programme after the two keynote speakers were unable to attend.

Sydney Conservatorium of Music associate lecturer in ensemble studies Dr Jeanell Carrigan (piano) and husband University of Sydney Associate Prof Goetz Richter (violin) were to be the keynote speakers at the Institute of Registered Music Teachers of New Zealand conference.

However, Dr Carrigan was injured in an accident last week and was unable to fly.

Dr Carrigan and Prof Richter are well-known music educators and have taught in institutions around the world.

An organising committee member, Vivienne McLean, said the accident was unfortunate, but the 80 registered music teachers at the conference were fortunate there was a wealth of talent within New Zealand to fill the void.

University of Otago piano lecturer Prof Terence Dennis and Canterbury University piano lecturer Prof Michael Endres would give lectures and recitals instead, she said.

The music teachers' conference closes tomorrow.
