Not many clubs can boast a continuous period of 86 years but that is exactly how long the Taieri Anglers Club has been in operation.

Life member Graeme McNeill said the club had a ''pretty steady'' membership of about 40 but welcomed prospective new members, especially younger ones.

''It's 86 years old and it's always been functional,'' Mr McNeill said.

''It's quite a friendly club. It's family oriented.''

The club had its annual meeting on Monday evening, when it discussed a number of matters, including dates and other business involving competitions for the coming season, which gets under way on the first weekend of October.

Secretary/treasurer John Sim said they held ''a couple'' of winter competitions, including a memorial competition for former member Des Bryant, who was a life member.

''We have regular competitions,'' he said.

''When the season starts, we have about 15 competitions.''

The club held several events at a hut at Lake Mahinerangi and had an array of cups and prizes for the competitions.

One such cup was the Gold Cup, which was aimed at promoting fishing for children and was one of the big events for the year.

Anyone wanting to know more about the Taieri Anglers Club can attend a meeting.

These are held on the first Monday of every month at the Mosgiel Volunteer Fire Brigade hall in Green St.
