Ms Kedgley was visiting the school as part of her campaign for support for edible gardens and cooking facilities in schools and for restoration of food guidelines for school canteens.
She plans to put a petition to Parliament's health select committee in the hope it will trigger a debate on the issues.
A generation of young New Zealanders was able to develop a website but unable to grow a potato, Ms Kedgley said.
"It's too late when they get to secondary school; you need the passion and enthusiasm young kids have when watching seeds develop and grow."
She was thrilled to see a Dunedin school with such a successful garden, she said. The school also has a new tunnel house, a worm farm and compost bin.
