Jury sees blood-spattered curtain

A blood-splattered green curtain screening the computer alcove from the lounge where David Bain's father lay dead, a rifle beside him, has been shown to the Christchurch jury hearing Bain's retrial.

Retired police detective Kevin Anderson told the jurors the blood splattered area was 9cm wide and on the lower half of the curtain. He took the curtain from a large rubbish bag and held it up to show the jurors what he was talking about.

Mr Anderson is the 37th witness to give evidence at 36-year-old Bain's second trial for the murders of his parents and three siblings at their Every St home on June 20, 1994.

Bain denies the charges. He says he returned home from his paper run and found his family had been shot.

When Mr Anderson yesterday produced the .22 rifle used in the murders, the jurors asked him to check it was not loaded.

Justice Panckhurst said the jurors were concerned that the rifle as well as live ammunition was in the courtroom.

Mr Anderson checked the rifle and told the jurors there was a lock on the trigger and no bullets in the barrel.
