A versatile scarf with handy pockets has won a young Dunedin designer a national fashion award.

Tahuna Normal Intermediate School pupil Jessica Astwood (12) won the junior creative section of the Bernina Young Fashion Awards with her creation.

Jessica won a new Bernina sewing machine, $500 of sewing products for her school and a trip to Wellington as her prize.

"Mum's going to be pleased about the sewing machine. She still uses a really old one she bought second-hand in the 1980s," she said yesterday.

"I've always wanted to be a fashion designer. I started by sewing a skirt when I was 9 and I've done quite a few things since then, for fundraisers and things like that. I love the designing part and then seeing how the actual thing turns out."

Her winning scarf doubled as a mobile storage unit.

"One pocket is for a phone or an iPod and there are pouches for random small things, like lipstick. There's also a big pocket for a wallet.

"It would be handy for parents with lots of children, so you don't have to carry a handbag," she said.

Tahuna Normal Intermediate School food and textile technology teacher Kendall McKee said Jessica was a natural with needle and thread.

"You show her something and she can reproduce it so accurately."

More than 600 entries were received for the awards.
