Yesterday, a flea market with a "Japanese flavour" was held at Pine Hill School.
Japanese family group "Kodomo Kai" organiser Kanako Lokman said the group got together regularly to celebrate Japanese seasonal festivals but did not feel like celebrating after the earthquakes.
"Then the flea market idea came up - something we could do to help."
About 1000 people attended and the Japanese food on offer was so popular it sold out by 1pm, she said.
"It just disappeared. There were long queues."
The Dunedin Otaru Sister City Society and the Otago Japan Club took part in the market, with proceeds going to the Red Cross Christchurch Earthquake Appeal and similar Japanese appeals.
"We're a small community but our combined power is so big."
She thanked all those who volunteered and supported the event.
