Jandals, thongs, flip-flops ... Call them what you will, but they will be marching out in force today in a promotion to encourage people to wear jandals to show support for surf life-savers.
Surf Life Saving New Zealand club development officer Steph Laughton said the ubiquitous New Zealand footwear was a fun symbol for the organisation's annual national appeal.
''Jandals are part of the beach, so it's a great icon to use to promote our fundraising appeal.''
Otago surf life-savers will be collecting in the greater Dunedin area from 7am tomorrow, starting at the St Clair Salt Water Pool.
An inflatable surf rescue boat and stall will also feature in the upper Octagon at today's weekly Friday market.
All funds raised locally would go to the four local Dunedin surf life-saving clubs at Warrington, St Kilda, St Clair and Brighton, Ms Laughton said.
Otago beaches will be patrolled from 11am till 7pm during the Christmas school holidays, from December 17 to January 25.
