'It's the best garden in Goodall St'

Retiring to Mosgiel made perfect sense to former Palmerston sheep and beef farmers Jack and Betty Popham, and a house in Goodall St has proved ideal for the pair.

Mrs Popham (83) said the couple had spend the past 19 years of their 58-year marriage in Goodall St.

They bought their home from the Nicols, who ran a wool-scouring business.

''They were good people. We are only the second owner of the house and it's about 50 years old.''

Mrs Popham said she had always liked Mosgiel, and since she was born there, it seemed the natural place to retire.

''I was born in Mosgiel in a taxi driven by Baldy McLean,'' she laughed.

Mr McLean may not have made the hospital on time that day, but he could keep time, she said.

''He used to play the drums in the band at the dances we used to go to many years ago.''

The 90 houses in Goodall St were the homes of ''working'' people, she said.

Mr Popham (85) agreed.

''There's no big luxury homes.''

Mrs Popham said her grandmother Cecilia Smith (nee Murphy) had travelled a long way - from Tipperary - to live in Mosgiel, and lived in the area until she passed away at the age of 98.

The Pophams were both keen gardeners and many of the flowers in the garden were blooming.

Mr Popham kept the vegetable garden and helped his wife with her rose garden.

''It's the best garden in Goodall St.''
