A local resident is concerned about the number of near misses at a North Dunedin intersection where a collision resulted in two people being taken to hospital yesterday.

A St John spokeswoman said it was notified of a collision between two cars at the intersection of Frederick and Leith Sts about 1.50pm yesterday.

Two ambulances attended and took two patients to Dunedin Hospital with moderate injuries, the spokeswoman said.

Leith St resident Christine Wongcharupan said she heard a loud crash and saw debris from the collision when she went outside.

There were collisions at the intersection often, but it was the first time that she knew of when an ambulance had been required, she said.

On a daily basis brakes could be heard screeching from near misses, Ms Wongcharupan said.

She hoped something could be done to make the intersection safer before someone was killed.

"I don’t like lives being sacrificed," Ms Wongcharupan said.

At the scene, a Nissan SUV with heavy damage to its front section could be seen blocking one lane of Frederick St while a member of Campus Watch directed traffic.

Police officers were also present.
