Information sought after taxi incident

A Dunedin taxi driver does not remember an incident in which he may have been assaulted by passengers.

Police are investigating after the 54-year-old Dunedin Taxis driver was found in a dazed state, with a cut on his head, lying on the footpath at the intersection of Ashmore St and Taieri Rd, about 9pm on Saturday.

He had picked up two men, believed to be in their 20s, about 15 minutes earlier, outside the Octagon Night 'n Day.

Police wanted to make contact with the ''good Samaritan'' who found the taxi driver on the footpath, Detective Matt Preece said.

''Police are keen to speak with this person, who appeared to be in his 30s and was wearing army camouflage trousers.

''They are also keen to speak with anyone else who might have seen the taxi driver on the corner of Ashmore St and Taieri Rd,'' he said.

The driver was taken to Dunedin Hospital and admitted for treatment, then later discharged.

''He has no recollection of the events that led up to his injuries,'' Det Preece said.

Dunedin Taxis director Murray Alcock said the incident was unfortunate and an isolated case.
