Dunedin police are investigating an alleged incident involving a police officer at an Alexandra cafe on July 26.
Southern police district operations manager Inspector Lane Todd confirmed a preliminary investigation had been started, based on reports of the incident.
He understood no official complaint had been received.
He could not elaborate on the alleged incident until the investigation established what happened, he said.
He expected the preliminary investigation to be completed next week.
The officer involved has not been stood down.
