Inaugural theatre awards

The extraordinary and the excellent will be recognised at the inaugural Dunedin Theatre Awards next Friday.

''We wanted to do something to celebrate a year of theatrical excellence in Dunedin during 2010,'' Dunedin director and actor Patrick Davies said yesterday.

''The awards will honour the best and brighest of our theatre community.

''It will also be a really good opportunity for everyone involved in Dunedin theatre, whether it's at the Fortune, the Globe or the Playhouse, to get together and talk about the year and share their stories.''

The event, at the Fortune Theatre, will also act as a welcome for new Fortune Theatre general manager Jeremy Smith and artistic director Lara Macgregor.

Awards will be presented for technical design, scenographic design, Dunedin script, male performance, female performance, director and production of the year.

A special ''wildcard'' award will also be presented to a person, event or company deserving of recognition, and an outstanding contribution award will be made to a person, event or company which has positively affected the Dunedin theatre arts.

The nominees will be selected by a panel of theatre critics and announced on Monday.

Dunedin producer and actor Peter Hayden will present the awards.
