Improving Dunedin one wall at a time

The Keep Dunedin Beautiful mural programme has been turning the city's graffiti-covered walls into works of art.
Since its inception two years ago, the Keep Dunedin Beautiful programme has been ridding the city of graffiti, one wall at a time.

With an aim to "make something beautiful where it is not beautiful", co-ordinator Darlene Thomson believed the programme's mural scheme was an absolute success.

"It's just amazing," she said.

Two annual plans ago, the group approached the Dunedin City Council requesting money be put aside for murals to prevent tagging with the idea of covering graffiti-prone areas with art.

In 2007, $4000 was given to the programme. With the help of donated paint from Resene, three murals were created.

This year, the programme again received $4000 but Mrs Thomson believed $10,000 had probably been spent.

"Where I can, I try to get businesses to pay for them . . .I stretch the money quite a bit."

Other organisations had also become involved such as Safer Cities and Taskforce Green.

Businesses, residents or organisations were able to apply to have a mural created and, if it was deemed a suitable site and resource consent was granted, work would begin.

When the scheme launched, she advertised for interested artists but had few responses.

Now, she had a team of them which created murals in differing styles.

These range from realist to graffiti style, which allows the applicant to request the kind of creation they would like.

Word of mouth was largely relied on to get people involved in the scheme and as there were quite a few places a mural was required, Mrs Thomson said she would like to get more funding.
