'Idiotic': Sober driver over limit among offenders nabbed

Police tested hundreds of drivers for alcohol around Dunedin last night and while most were well behaved, some "idiotic" people left officers disappointed.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said none of the 398 drivers breath tested in Wharf St from 3.15pm to 5.30pm was over the 250mcg limit.

However, in Stone St between 6.30pm and 8.30pm, two of the 377 drivers tested were over the limit.

The 49-year-old female driver of a Nissan Tilda tried to evade the checkpoint.

The woman tried to give false details to officers, but was found to be disqualified from driving and was on court bail not to drive or consume alcohol.

She blew a breath alcohol result of 328mcg, was issued an infringement notice and arrested for breaching her bail.

A 52-year-old man driving a Toyota had a few pints at the Mornington Tavern and blew a result of 454mcg, but requested blood levels be taken.

In Owen St, Green Island a 25-year-old man said he was acting as sober driver for his friends, but when tested found to be driving with a breath alcohol level of 356mcg.

Snr Sgt Bond said the result was "disappointing and idiotic".

The idea of a sober driver drinking "goes against everything that a sober driver means".

"The driver should have known better and the passengers shouldn’t have let him drive."

At 12.30am today an 18-year-old man was stopped due to excessive braking.

He recorded a breath alcohol level of 247mcg and would appear in Dunedin District Court.
