"Idiotic'' Dunedin drivers who attempted to go through the road closed barriers on Three Mile Hill Rd this morning put themselves and police at risk, Senior Sergeant Mel Aitken said.

The road was closed about 8.30am to 9am this morning after some minor accidents and cars sliding off the road as cold southerly weather conditions brought hail and sleet to near sea level.

It was expected Three Mile Hill Rd would be closed until tomorrow.

"There are some idiotic drivers going through the barrier putting themselves and my staff at risk.''

Most of the city's hill suburbs were affected by snow making roads and footpaths slippery and closing some schools.

Also closed due to snow this morning was SH85 Palmerston to Kyeburn. At about midday the Lindis Pass and SH87 from Outram to Middlemarch had their status lifted to caution required after being closed this morning.

Dunedin's northern motorway was closed to all but light vehicles after some trucks became stuck at Pigeon Flat last night.

MetService was warning 15-20cm of snow could accumulate above 300m in Eastern Otago including Dunedin's hill suburbs, with lesser amounts down to 100m to mid-afternoon today.
